If we have not met before, the first step is to go through an informed consent. This is a document that helps explain things such as how we operate in session, fee structure, and confidentiality. This process takes about 5 minutes. Then you will get a chance to express what brought you in for your appointment. We listen closely to your cues to get an idea of what you'd like to work on in the following sessions. This is a great time to get a sense of whether your therapist is a good fit for you and your needs.
All you'll need to bring is yourself to the appointment. Although it is not necessary, it can be helpful to bring a journal to write notes down or what the homework may be after that session.
This answer will depend on several different factors: the type and depth of concerns being addressed, the number and frequency of sessions and the ability and readiness to change. Our goal is to work with you at whatever place you are in your journey already, as well as at the pace that works for you. It is important not to compare one's journey to another's as each situation is unique in its challenges.
You are welcome to contact us to reschedule or do so yourself online. We require at least 24hr notice for appointment changes and cancellations. This time allows for those appointment times to be available to others. If it is less than 24hr notice, you may be charged for the full session fee. Life throws unexpected situations at us and we understand this. If it is an emergency, let us know as soon as you can and no fee will be charged.
One of our goals is to make sure that you feel safe and comfortable and that includes the person that you are working with. If it is something that can be changed in terms of interventions or approach, you can mention this to your therapist and they can let you know if these adjustments can be made. If you feel that you do not connect with your therapist, your therapist can help you find another therapist who may fit your needs more closely. As this is not a conventional social relationship, no offence will be taken if this is the case.
Sessions are a great place to work through some difficult concerns. Homework is often assigned at the end of each session in order to help you continue processing what was talked about in session. This can be in the form of a task to be done or an activity. Many find these tools helpful in boosting progress along the way and creating accountability.
Yes we do offer direct billing at the time for Alberta Blue Cross, Greenshield and NIHB. If you do not have one of these companies you will be required to pay for sessions up front. You are then given an electronic receipt that you can submit to your healthcare provider.
We do our best to work within your financial concerns and can offer a sliding scale to those without coverage. Please contact us to discuss your individual situation.
